The song was released in 1943 and recorded by The Four Vagabonds. You can listen to the song in the story on this site’s homepage. it’s really fun. Music imitates the sound of a riveting gun. In my 2015 phone interview with Elinor Otto, the longest working Rosie who retired in 2014 at the age of 94, she said she would listen to the song in the morning for motivation to go to work.

A key development in the mass production of penicillin was British scientists collaborating with American scientists at a USDA lab in Peoria, Illinois. A lab assistant was given the task of shopping local markets to look for decaying fruit. She brought a moldy cantaloupe back from a market and the strain of Penicillium mold on the cantaloupe turned out to be a super producer of penicillin. The strain was used to make most of the penicillin in 1944. Mary Hunt was the lab assistant so she earned the nickname “Moldy Mary” by her colleagues. I love these details that truly brings history alive!

Quick note on the time stamp. It’s off a bit so we are looking at that right now. It’s still Wednesday afternoon and not evening!

During World War II, it took about 18 months to convert large factories or build new ones, which were often complete in less than 18 months. By 1943-1944, factories were running at peak capacity. In 2020, it took Coppercraft Distillery just a few weeks to source ingredients and start their production line for hand sanitizer.
