Oct. 2, 2026 – Judith Stanford Miller, Stories 250 editor, continues her search for the short 1942 war bond film in which Cornelia Fort, the first female pilot to die in service to the country, appeared. Cornelia is the subject of Redwood Educational Technologies’ 90-minute documentary, Crosswinds: The Courageous Life of Cornelia Fort. On Dec. 7, 1941, Cornelia was in the air instructing a student, a defense worker, in Honolulu when the Pearl Harbor attack began. She came nose-to-nose with a Japanese Zero, evaded the attack, and landed safely back at John Rodgers Airport, a civilian airport. In April 1942, MGM Studios came to Nashville to film Cornelia telling her Pearl Harbor experience for a U.S. Treasury war bond film. After more than three years of research, Judith continues her search for the film. She recently returned from a visit to the National Archives in College Park, Maryland and is currently pursuing a lead developed there. Judith remains committed to finding it because of its tremendous historical value to the country and its personal value to Cornelia’s family.
